Have you thought of being a WordPress Developer? And wondering what it will take to be a WordPress Developer. I am sharing some of the tips and get you started your career as a WordPress Developer.
First a short Intro on WordPress
WordPress is a CMS or framework built on PHP and MYSQL for backend and frontend is mostly built on HTML5, CSS3, and JQuery. You can use Vanilla JS if you want. In most of the case when you work as a WordPress Developer, it’s expected to handle both Front End and Backend development on your own.
Front End Skillset for WordPress
For the front end, part of WordPress, good knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and Jquery is needed.
I prefer to write my HTML5 and CSS3. But you can get away using one of the popular frameworks like Bootstrap or Zurb. There are a few upcoming new frameworks that are pretty good too. But nothing is like writing your markup.
Jquery is another skill that you need to learn to be a WordPress Developer. You can get away with Jquery most of the time but in case if you are planning to use WordPress as part of headless CMS, you need to know Vanilla or plain javascript too.
Backend Skillset for WordPress
For the backend of WordPress, you need to learn PHP and MYSQL.
PHP handles the dynamic interactive part of WordPress. It is a server-side programming language, used for requesting data from the server.
MYSQL is a database management system. To interact with the MYSQL database, you need to learn SQL query language.
Personal Suggestion
If you want to be a good WordPress Developer, start working with custom development even though its for a small website. Try avoiding using too many premium themes or plugins, as you will end up with the bad product. If you want to become a good WordPress Developer making decent money, you have to know WordPress core as much as possible and also make yourself updated with the latest frontend technologies too.
